Job description

Candidate will create compelling online and print score report designs, and support the visual design of client web applications and websites as needed. The position requires excellent data analysis and visualization skills, creativity, strong attention to detail and accuracy, and applied knowledge of usable design principles. Candidate must demonstrate the ability to quickly create multiple approaches to a visual design challenge, to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each, and to arrive at an optimum design. The candidate selected will be a strong written and oral communicator, a well-organized self-starter and team player.

The Visual Information Designer will:

• Create compelling online and print score report designs, understanding the reporting needs for each assessment.
• Correctly interpret technical input from psychometricians and other technical experts and convert this information into workable score report designs that are clear and visually compelling.
• Analyze score information and assessment goals to ensure that score report designs meet all customer and stakeholder requirements.
• Create designs that enable viewers to quickly and easily understand the key score information being conveyed.
• Design online score reports with interactive features that enable viewers to drill down for more report data, manipulate data, etc.
• Design for desktop, tablet and mobile devices, where appropriate.
• Work with information technology staff and web developers to ensure that designs can be easily technically produced.
• Ensure that completed designs comply with WCAG accessibility requirements for contrast, readability, screen readers and other assistive technologies.
• Ensure that completed designs comply with all Client branding and graphic guidelines and legal requirements.
• Evolve designs as internal and client needs and other inputs dictate.
• Work collaboratively with user experience experts to ensure the usability of designs.
• Take initial design work done by others and bring it to the same professional quality that the candidate applies to his/her own designs.
• Manage own time, ensuring that all deadlines are met.
• Build strong relationships with team members to ensure high-quality work and timely flawless delivery of materials.
• Foster a positive, solutions-based work environment.
• If needed, provide visual design support for various ETS online applications and websites.

Experience and Skills

This individual must have:

• Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or Art, or 3+ years experience as a visual information designer, graphic designer, user interface designer or similar role in a professional environment.
• Portfolio of score report designs, information graphics, user interface designs, web applications, or visually compelling charts, graphs, tables or complex data visualization examples.
• Experience creating professional quality visual designs for print production or suitable for web.
• Strong attention to layout, composition, typography, color, navigation and information design details.
• Expert understanding of visual and usable design principles with ability to apply them to designs
• Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and experience interacting with clients.
• Proficient knowledge of HTML5, CSS, responsive design and front-end web design for desktop and mobile devices.
• Ability to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of specific design approaches and articulate why a particular approach is more effective.
• Ability to work independently and quickly in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to produce high quality work within strict deadlines and to adjust the work to meet evolving requirements.

In addition, the following skills are considered a plus:

• Knowledge of user experience design, usability, user research
• Experience creating wireframes and interactive prototypes (using Axure, iRise, or similar software)
• Practical knowledge of WCAG accessibility guidelines and practices
• Experience designing within agile development environments
• Copywriting and/or editing experience for websites and web applications
• Project management experience
• Knowledge of, or experience with, educational testing programs.
