Sizing up small business challenges

What challenges keep small business owners up at night?

Small business owners have a lot on their plates. And, according to our recent poll, they have a lot on their minds, too. Check out our infographic to find out what worries small business leaders the most.

The biggest small business challenge? Growth.

Of the half billion new small businesses that open every year, just 70 percent make it to their two-year anniversary and just 25 percent are still around after 15 years. Surviving growing pains is the biggest challenge facing small business owners, with 34 percent of our respondents citing it as a major worry.

Fortunately, there is a proven way to spur growth – and that is by making smarter and better hiring decisions and keeping your smartest and best employees.

The Affordable Care Act Is a Big Small Business Challenge

Thirty percent of small business leaders we surveyed listed the Affordable Care Act as a big source of worry. In order to steer clear of the ACA’s employer mandates, many are hiring independent contractors to stay under the 50 full-time-employee threshold (many of the provisions of the law only apply to employers with 50 or more full-time workers).

However, while hiring independent contractors may seem like a good way to save money, it is also a quick way to get exposed to misclassification penalties and risks.

At Adecco, we help small business owners ensure proper classification, and we can help you maintain a flexible, affordable and high-performing workforce that fuels your growth without draining your budget. To learn more, contact us today.
