STEM careers are on the rise…

Between 2000 and 2010, the number of STEM occupations grew three-times faster than other fields. The trend is expected to continue; between 2010 and 2020, the number of STEM occupations is projected to grow 16.8 percent.

...but the availability of STEM talent is falling fast.

The number of vacancies for STEM jobs is nearly triple that of other roles, and the unemployment rate for STEM professionals with bachelor’s degrees is less than half that of the general population, and 1.5 percentage points lower than those with bachelor’s degrees in other fields.

As a result, companies are finding it harder and harder to fill their STEM jobs with qualified talent. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to grow your talent pool and buoy your chance of landing great STEM talent.

For example, you can borrow some proven STEM recruitment strategies from startups and tech companies – offer naps, free drinks, even haircuts. You can also consider looking outside your immediate geographic area to build a remote team of STEM workers.
