Job Summary:

Procures a high volume and variety of materials, supplies and services. In collaboration with Commodity Specialists, evaluates bids, selects and recommends suppliers, negotiates price, and monitors suppliers to ensure their delivery, quality and service meet client expectations. Executes system generated requisitions while monitoring inventory levels to ensure adequate supply of assigned commodities in support of company production. Commodities may be somewhat complex, and shortages may have considerable impact on production. Uses innovative thinking to solve supply issues. Conducts supplier relations in a manner that results in maintaining Company goals related to cost, quality and inventory level. Collects and analyzes data in support of sourcing decisions. The functions of the Buyer II will be performed under little supervision, under stringent deadlines and with acceptable quality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under broad supervision, monitors supply of assigned commodities and initiates purchase orders to anticipate and meet supply requirements.  Works in conjunction with Commodity Specialist on supply chain issues (i.e. delivery, quality or inventory) to ensure uninterrupted supply of assigned commodities.
  • Coordinates with Commodity Specialists to analyze and evaluate all aspects of supply chain for assigned commodities. May require significant work developing stocking programs and monitoring on hand inventory, stocking levels and demand under guidance of Commodity Specialist. 
  • Expedites production materials as necessary to meet schedules and maintain Purchase Order data to reflect actual supplier commitments. Creates and executes shipping documents.
  • In coordination with Commodity Specialist, engineering, quality and planning, determines most appropriate disposition actions for non-conforming material and warranty items, acting as needed.
  • Coordinates with Commodity Specialists and suppliers regarding damage claims, rejections, losses, return of materials, over shipment, cancellations and implementation of engineering changes.
  • Under general supervision, responsible for interpretation and decision making about requisition quantity. Monitors purchasing exception report, delinquent P.O.’s and outstanding invoice issue report and works with Commodity Specialist and Supervision to resolve.
  • Handles majority of fact finding in support of resolving quality and inventory discrepancies.
  • Executes expense requisitions by reviewing for completeness, determines appropriate supplier based on established relationships, and initiates purchase orders. Analyzes supply chain for potential improvements in cost, quality and delivery.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with suppliers and provides superior customer service to internal customers.
  • Resolves supplier invoice memos from Accounts Payable, and discrepancies in Receiving.
  • Understands and maintains ERP’s purchasing data to provide accurate information to all dependent departments and optimize material planning.  Other duties may be assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field required plus a minimum of 2 years purchasing experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Proven self-starter with proven purchasing skills and excellent customer service; ability to prioritize activities to complete entire workload.
  • Intermediate user of computer business applications required (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Experience working with an integrated Purchasing system (Oracle preferred).
  • Prior purchasing experience in a Demand Flow/Lean environment preferred.
  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to use multiple sources to collect data and draw valid conclusions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
