Position Summary:

The Co-op position will work closely with our new product development team located at the Richmond, VA site. This site focuses on the development of porous solutions utilizing a variety of bonded fiber technologies. As the term progresses, the overall expectations for this Co-op will gradually increase. To start, the Co-op will provide support to new product development activities. Later, the Co-op will take more responsibility by participating in project execution and task management. Total of 3 terms are expected. At the end, the student will gain sufficient experiences in experimental design and execution; data collection and statistical analysis; results organization, summary and presentation; basic project management and new product development.

Essential Functions:


Provide basic support to new product development projects.
Collect, organize and summarize data of both process conditions and test results.
Conduct product performance tests and characterization.
Perform analytical tests including test procedure development.
Lab scale chemical batch mixing/preparation.
Sample preparation, shipping and tracking.
Clear, accurate documentation of trials and testing procedures.


Improve methods for data collection, testing and result analysis.
Participate in experimental design and execution.
Develop experimental procedures and characterization methods.
Participate in trial production and new product scale up operation.
Support new product / process transfer (R&D to Operations) efforts.
Work together with application engineers and commercial team to manage the front end of the new product development pipeline.
Develop and update matrix of new product development activities.


Take responsibilities of task management of large product development projects.
Work with cross-functional teams to support new product launch plan.
Support new product qualification planning and execution.
Support new process testing and validation activities.
Support preparation of new product qualification reports.


Raising junior (sophomore?) or above in chemical engineering or material science field.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Basic problem solving and logical thinking skills.
Data driven and statistical tools such as MiniTab preferred.
Capable of conducting experimental design and execution involving infrequent physical requirement such as lifting up to 50-lbs of weight.
Good at record keeping and documentation.
Trust, integrity, and be initiative.
Collaboration and Teamwork
Computer skills including MS Office particularly the knowledge of Excel.
Minimum 2 terms (semesters).
Starting date: immediate.

Work Environment
Office, laboratory and air-conditioned pilot production environment.
Close interactions with cross functional teams.
Use of basic mechanical hand tools and device assembly equipment.
Physical Demands – standing and infrequent lifting (less than 35lbs).
