PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
� Record and uniquely identify test samples submitted to the metallurgical laboratory and track the status of the work until completed.
� Aid the metallurgist by performing tests on both ferrous and non-ferrous raw materials and finished products to ensure that they conform to their engineering specifications.
� Sample preparation in the form of sectioning, hot and cold mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching with various chemically reactive solutions.
� Use of an optical stereoscope and optical microscope along with digital cameras to photograph, take measurements, characterize macro and micro structures, and generate short reports.
� Carry out various forms of hardness testing including regular and superficial Rockwell, Brinell, Knoop, Vickers, and Micro C scale readings. Manual and automated test equipment.
� Operate tensile and compression testers to generate stress-strain curves and applicable data.
� Perform chemical analysis of ferrous materials using an optical emission spectrometer and LECO carbon/sulfur/oxygen determinator.
� Review and update ISO work instructions for metallurgical laboratory equipment.
� Support drive shaft lab personnel as needed to install reverse torsional fatigue and ultimate torque testing samples onto test equipment.
� Assist prototype lab personnel as needed to meet drive shaft build requirements.
� Inspect lab equipment for mechanical issues, occasionally clean test equipment, and inform metallurgist on status of lab consumables.
� Supervise the work of co-op students or summer interns.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
� Excellent interpersonal, computer, and time management skills.
� Ability to take direction from the metallurgical engineer and react quickly to critical issues.
� Experience in the automotive manufacturing or steel making industry preferred.
� A minimum of Associates degree in welding, materials technology, or metallurgical technology.
� 1 year or more of relevant experience.
