Job Summary
Responsible for operating and maintaining laboratory equipment and for accurately recording results of tests within the Packaging Development Laboratory. Conduct tests to support heat sealer process validations, packaging material design verifications, design of experiments, range studies and shelf life studies. Position responsibility also includes maintaining laboratories and following good laboratory practices.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

§ Assists in the design, construction and use of special test fixtures and apparatuses.
§ Performs tests and experiments under supervision.
§ Accurately records data and assists in its organization and analysis.
§ Uses computerized data acquisition and control systems.
§ Performs required maintenance of laboratory equipment and machinery.
§ Assists Research engineers and technicians and has a significant personal contact with others in the Research Department, as well as with other departments.

§ Demonstrated ability to independently perform all necessary routine lab procedures in a timely manner.
§ Ability to train new or less experienced Lab Technicians.
§ Ability to operate sophisticated test equipment.
§ Detail oriented, analytical, and alert, as the work is of a non-routine nature.
§ Ability to exercise good judgment in determining the reasonableness of the results.
§ Possess effective verbal and written communication skills.
§ Ability to execute protocols and work with minimum supervision.
§ Ability to work in a team environment and build relationships with other areas of the organization.
§ Ability to keep and record accurate and legible data using good documentation practices.
§ Ability to transport items in the 30-pound range.
§ Ability to write technical documents.
§ Knowledge of orthopedic materials is beneficial.
§ Working knowledge of PRISYM/Global Labeling System required.
§ Knowledge of packaging materials (their applications) and sterilization methods.
§ Must have working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices.

Education/ Experience Requirements
§ Must have previous experience as a Lab Technician. Packaging Lab experience preferred.
§ Experience with Process validation and Packaging Design verification methods.
§ Previous experience in some of the following areas: sterile barrier integrity testing, peel strength testing, distribution conditioning and laboratory procedures.
