Adecco Creative is assisting our client, a well-known children’s educational publisher, in their search for a freelance Proofreader. This is a full time freelance role, working 35-40 hours per week onsite in the client’s downtown Manhattan offices, and expected to last up to a year with the possibility of extension.


The role is paying $25 per hour. Qualified candidates MUST have prior experience within book publishing and/or educational materials.


Overview of Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Proofread instructional and research materials, fiction and nonfiction leveled reader books for children, professional trade books, and marketing content digitally (on screen) and on hard copy (can include cold read of layout or manuscript, checking copy against manuscript, confirming corrections, reviewing printer proofs, confirming reprints, and reviewing templates/samples).
  • Perform content QA of digital components such as ebooks, online assessments, digital teaching systems, audio, and programs adapted for use on tablets.
  • Enter text, corrections, and formatting into Adobe InCopy, Adobe Acrobat, proprietary digital editing tools, Microsoft Office, FileMaker (for some), and other software.
  • Perform editorial support, such as checking content across documents as requested or marking reprint corrections.


Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Excellent knowledge of English language, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and nuance
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition (flexible; can train if needed) or other commonly used style manuals, such as APA, MLA, or AMA
  • Experience with on-screen proofreading and Adobe InCopy and Acrobat (PDF editing) desired.
  • Knowledge of standard proofreading marks
  • Neat handwriting
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and ask relevant questions
  • Ability to move between projects with different guidelines and needs
