Adecco Creative is assisting our client, a nonprofit educational testing and assessment organization, in their search for a freelance Proofreader/Editor. This is a full time freelance position, working 40 hours per week ONSITE in the client's Ewing, NJ offices, and expected to last approximately 6 months with the possibility of being extended. This is an immediate need, starting ASAP. 


Please note that this role is fully onsite in Ewing, NJ and interested candidates MUST have reliable transportation. Remote work is not permitted.


The Proofreader/Editor will contribute to the success of the cross-functional California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) under the direction of the CAASPP Program Management Leadership Team.  The Proofreader/Editor is responsible for proofreading and reviewing content for accurate use of grammar and style for various materials as well as formatting for consistency and accessibility. This role corrects any grammatical, typographical or compositional errors in content and design for digital materials. Additionally, the Proofreader/Editor ensures that documents adhere to various style guides and formats, and accessibility compliance guidelines. 


Primary Responsibilities: 
• Review copy and make recommended changes using program-specific and Chicago Manual of Style guidelines to produce error-free work for internal and external communication vehicles. 
• Review graphic layouts in all phases of completion to ensure that branding and graphic standards are implemented correctly for internal and external communication vehicles. 
• Maintain a strong understanding of and familiarity with the program-specific,and Chicago and style guides. 
• Develop copy of major internal and external communication vehicles as needed. 
• Proofread and review all print and electronic content for accurate use of grammar and style. 
• Serve as a fact checker for all materials including names of entities associated with the program. 
• Review layout to ensure accuracy and consistency with branding guidelines and corporate vision. 
• Support the program branding effort and promote equity by ensuring that all project work created by the CAASPP program meets the established branding and identity guidelines. 
• Provide additional support to team when necessary. 


• Error-free internal and external communications vehicles. 
• Correct implementation of branding and graphics. 
• Fact checking for print and electronic content materials. 
• Documents that are 100% accurate and adhere to appropriate style and format. 

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or a related field is required. 
• 3-5 years of experience as an editor or proofreader in a professional environment. 
• Prior experience editing both technical and informational communications of short (one page) and long (20 + pages) so the material adheres to style and content standards for the program as a whole. 
• Previous writing experience desirable. 
• Must have a thorough knowledge of the rules of grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation. 
Strong working knowledge of PC and basic software programs; intermediate or advanced skills in MS Word preferred; experience with PowerPoint and other desktop publishing or graphic software a plus. 
• Word skills must include table formatting (creating and splitting tables and cells); style creation, modification, and application; page layout; and accessibility best practices; linking cross-references, hyperlinks, and bookmarks; working with dynamic fields; creating captions; inserting symbols, quick parts, page numbers, and other features to enhance a document’s usability, etc. 
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. 
• Must be highly organized and have the ability to work on complex projects concurrently to meet deadlines. 
• Ability to work independently and quickly in a fast-paced environment and handle pressure without sacrificing quality.
