A Research and Development Associate III role in Durham, NC is now available through Adecco Medical and Science. In this role, we are looking for someone to provide expertise in next generation sequencing (NGS) and in the application of NGS-related technologies to support efforts to expand the use of NGS capabilities for genotyping and other traditionally PCR-based applications. This person will work with a senior scientist, but will be expected to operate independently. Looking for someone with a recent PhD (with this job somewhat like a post-doc), or with a Masters plus several years’ experience. This is a minimum 1-year contract role starting immediately.

The responsibilities of the Research and Development Associate III role include:

Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluation of new methods to enable the application of next generation sequencing (NGS) to higher throughput, lower cost applications (e.g., cheaper library prep, new approaches to DNA concentration normalization, etc.).
Provide data analysis and management expertise for NGS applications and to support prototype tool development within the broader Biology Technology function. Customize reporting format as needed.
We are looking for someone with expertise/experience with next-generation sequencing platforms, as well as with the use of computational tools to analyze sequencing and other "big data."

Beneficial expertise, but not critical
Experience translating methods from the laboratory to a routine pipeline.
Experience with multivariate approaches and tools (Design of Experiments, JMP-SAS, etc.) for method development and process optimization.
Management/maintenance of sequencing and related equipment used by Molecular Analytics.
Support testing of novel methods for genotyping involving NGS as well as more traditional PCR-based approaches.
Provide in-house support for continuing efforts towards rare variant detection using NGS.
Provide subject matter expertise on NGS projects.

Qualifications (Education, Certifications and/or Experience)

Ph.D., or a Master's degree with 3+ years of professional experience, in Molecular Biology, Plant Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, or related field.
A strong understanding of NGS: fundamentals, critical factors influencing data quality, and an ability to troubleshoot the sequencing process end to end.
Experience with commercial tools for analysis of NGS data, and an understanding of scripting (in Unix or other relevant platform) required for analysis of NGS and other big data.”
Techniques in molecular biology including DNA extraction and purification, PCR and qPCR, DNA library preparation, etc.
Three+ years of hands-on experience maintaining and running next-generation sequencing instruments, including at least Illumina sequencers. The ideal candidate would also have experience with other NGS platforms such as Ion Torrent, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, etc.
Expertise in the analysis and management of NGS and other “big data”.
Demonstrated expertise in molecular biology wet lab skills including DNA extraction and purification from diverse tissue samples, DNA library preparation, etc.
Experience with optimization of wet lab techniques to improve sequencing data quality, robustness, etc.
Strong scientific background in molecular biology and next generation sequencing technology, with experience managing and analyzing large data sets.
Skill sets in Bioinformatics and relevant tools.
Project management knowledge to successfully navigate a complex technical and matrix environment.
Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, multi-site, multi-cultural, cross-business environment; must be able to deal with complexity, some ambiguity and maintain focus on essential activities.
National and international travel on infrequent basis.
