SAFETY MANAGER


General Function:
Primary responsibility of this position is to oversee and administer the company’s safety and worker’s compensation program.

Manage the Company’s safety programs including its Worker’s Compensation program.
Provide assistance and guidance to the organization to mitigate worker’s compensation risk and provides technical safety support and information to production and corporate personnel.
Identify common safety issues and formulate safety policies and procedures to resolve the identified issues. Institute and facilitate best practice sharing amongst the various operating units in the Company.
Develop and manage a robust health and safety environment and awareness program including employee safety committees where appropriate.
Develop policies and procedures for loss prevention and risk control and deploy systems to measure and monitor OSHA health and safety statistics (TCIR/DART).
Ensure that regulatory changes and updates are obtained, reviewed and implemented through bulletins, notices, manuals, Operating Rules, job briefings and training;
Oversees administration of worker’s compensation programs including claims handling and return to work programs.


Provide guidance and support to Managers and Supervisors and act as a resource on safety, regulatory and worker’s compensation issues. Provide regulatory reports to the management team and customers as required.
Coordinate with the finance, operations, engineering and human resources organizations to ensure worker’s compensation claims are effectively managed. Interface with all departments on safety investigations and resolutions.
Coordinate responses to OSHA investigations, citations, and negotiations and coordinate with designated internal and/or external legal representatives
Act as liaison with the Worker Compensation Company and attorneys.


Conduct, develop and/or coordinate training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment
Conduct, facilitate, and review safety audits to ensures compliance with federal, state, local and company regulations


Education / Experience:

A bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience in safety and risk management is required.
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) a plus

Other Requirements:
Office environment with frequent exposure to manufacturing, port etc
Travel to other facilities throughout North America is required.


Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of risk management.
Ability to effectively analyze factors concerning risk, liability, safety and occupational hazards
Experience with rail transit or rail transportation experience would be an asset
Ability to identify and resolve problems
Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to areas of responsibility; OSHA experience would be considered as an asset;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Ability to work extended schedule to include some weekends
Must be willing to travel to other facilities within North America (25%)


Proven track record of improving safety performance by instituting behaviorally based safety programs
