Summary:


Responsible for purchase order processing and management for ingredients, packaging components, services, equipment and outside processors in response to purchase requisitions, MRP requirements and company needs. Select and negotiate with approved suppliers to maintain competitive pricing, and assist with analyzing the market place and material supply to improve quality, and reduce cost. Coordinate and train personnel engaged in purchasing raw material, packaging components, and MRO supplies to gain efficiencies. Lead special projects as necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


* Process purchase orders based on MRP planning reports for raw materials and packaging components, or purchase requisitions for non-inventory acquisitions.
* Manage sourcing and sample approval processing for existing ingredients and components necessary to accomplish company objectives.
* Interact with all departments throughout the company.
* Track and report supplier delivery performance and expedite delivery of goods as needed.
* Order and coordinate the delivery of imported raw materials to meet scheduling requirements.
* Perform ongoing sourcing of new packaging and raw materials suppliers to meet production and customer requirements.
* Resolve non-conformance items through internal and external processes including corrective action process and pursue continuous improvement.
* Discuss defective or unacceptable goods or services with Quality personnel and others to determine root cause of problem and the corrective action required. Ensure rejected material is returned to supplier within established lead-time.
* Coordinate product returns with Shipping/Receiving and Accounts Payable regarding billing discrepancies.
* Recommend changes to management regarding supplier performance and pricing opportunities. Maintain tactical and strategic relationships with suppliers.
* Represent the Purchasing in interdepartmental meetings and cross-functional teams.
* Evaluate raw material information such as pricing and market trends. React to supply issues by informing leadership of all options that are available to assist with maintaining or improving established costs.
* Assist R&D and Regulatory departments on raw material technical issues and/or qualification of existing/replacement raw materials.
* Monitor raw material sample submissions from suppliers and track progress through the approval process. Prioritize items as necessary.
* Train new buyers and lead cross-training with all buyers to improve the overall knowledge and efficiency of the Purchasing team.
* Negotiate short-term purchase contracts and consignment agreements with suppliers in an effort to reduce NAI on-hand inventories and meet or beat cost objectives.
* Assist with departmental management responsibilities in the absence of the Purchasing Manager or Director.
* Must be a self-starter and be able to work in conjunction and independently of others in the department.

Job Requirements:

* AA degree or higher; minimum of five years experience in the pharmaceutical or nutraceutical industry.
* Ability to work with minimal supervision.
* Strong written and oral communication skills; must be able to communicate with all levels of the organization.
* Effective interpersonal, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
* Must be highly organized & disciplined about completing tasks within deadlines.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks where changing priorities is necessary.
* Knowledge of material management and MRP systems. Prior Baan system experience is a plus.
* Must be proficient with computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Statistical analysis skills; must be able to analyze trends and statistical data and make appropriate decisions and recommendations.
* Strong commitment to ongoing process improvements and being an integral part of the success of the organization.
* APICS, NAPM, or related certification desired.
