Surface Water Monitoring Employees - General Scope of Work

* Assist with field season preparation, including review of maps and geographic information system data for selecting monitoring sites, determining site characteristics, and identifying land ownership status; Prepare preliminary files and field forms.
* Assist with measuring chemical, biological, and physical properties of streams and lakes associated with assessments of water quality condition and development of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), including collection of water, aquatic invertebrate and algae samples from streams and lakes and application of basic surveying techniques to measure stream morphology and habitat characteristics.
* Compile and organize files and field forms, perform calculations, review and manually enter data into spreadsheets and databases, perform basic data analyses.
* Complete other related tasks as assigned

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

A bachelor’s degree in an environmental science field is preferred; greater preference will be given to those with coursework in aquatic biology, hydrology, watershed management, or other related fields. Current students in an environmental science degree program will be considered. Experience with Microsoft Office applications, ArcGIS, and various aquatic sampling and survey methods are helpful. The ability to work effectively as part of a team, strong communication and listening skills, and a meticulous attention to detail are essential.

Physical Effort and Working Conditions

One must be able to walk up to five miles in sometimes steep, rocky or muddy terrain and work in adverse weather and working conditions. Working conditions could include temperatures ranging from 30-100 degrees F, bright sunlight, strong wind, rain, snow, and biting insects. The ability to comfortably wade in swift flowing, rocky or muddy streams to depths of waist-height, work from a boat or raft and carry up to 30 pounds is required. These positions require a significant amount of overnight travel, including occasional camping, in remote areas of the state where cell phone service may not be available. While safety is our foremost concern and foreseeable hazardous conditions are avoided, employees may be subject to potentially hazardous conditions when sudden, unexpected changes in weather, road conditions, and stream flows are encountered.

Other Conditions

Transportation to and from field sites is provided by WDEQ. Temporary employees are responsible for their own transportation to and from their assigned WDEQ field office. Temporary employees may not drive State vehicles.

Necessary safety equipment and waders will be provided. All other field clothing, such as shirts, pants, boots, jackets, raingear, hats, or gloves are the responsibility of the employee.

Travel Reimbursement

Lodging costs for overnight trips will be reimbursed based on an actual expense basis at the same rate allowed to State employees (generally not-to-exceed $93 per night, plus tax, with some exceptions). Meals and incidental expenses also will be paid at the same rate as for State employees. For most locations in the State this rate is currently $51 per day for each full day of travel involving an overnight stay, and 75% of that amount for each partial day involving an overnight stay. Temporary employees are not reimbursed for costs incurred during one-day trips (leave and return to the office on the same day).

Wages

$14 per hour plus overtime as needed.
