Some of the position responsibilities include:

  • Independent analysis and appraisal of a broad range of insurance applications, may approve, classify or decline applications for various ages and policy amounts.
  • Provide mentoring to Underwriting Specialists with complicated cases and customer escalations, when needed.
  • Determine underwriting requirements and consider all factors which may impact insurability- including but not limited to financial, occupational and medical information.
  • Communicate frequently by telephone and written correspondence with internal and external customers to clarify and resolve underwriting information.
  • Independently partner with internal customers regarding underwriting questions and case management.
  • Actively support continuous learning and improvement while meeting departmental quality, service and production goals.
  • Lead departmental and divisional projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Provide assistance to Lead Underwriting Consultants.

Here is the desired background and skill set:

  • 8+ years of Disability Underwriting experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or proven success in DI Underwriting role as evidence by satisfactory case management and quality review.
  • Strong analytical skills with an established record to make independent decisions on complex cases and apply sound judgement in the application of guidelines and rules.
  • Perform with excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to handle confidential information, exercise tact, diplomacy and resourcefulness.
  • Proficient computer skills and high comfort level using various software packages.
  • Perform work accurately while maintaining speed and flexibility and contributing effectively to team and departmental goals to meet deadlines and handle priorities efficiently.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills and high degree of self-motivation and initiative to lead projects, etc. while adapting to a continuously changing work environment.
  • Professional communication and proper grammar is required.
